Don’t mess with the queen! Madonna fired back at BET after the network dissed her tribute to the late Prince at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.
The 57-year-old entertainer shared a photo of herself wearing a patterned jacket and a motorcycle hat on Instagram on Saturday, May 28, which she captioned, “Wearing the jacket Prince gave me back in the day without permission from BET. Lol! God Bless America.”
As Us Weekly previously reported, Madonna belted out Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” before being joined onstage by Stevie Wonder for a soulful rendition of “Purple Rain” at the BBMAs in Las Vegas on May 22. Her touching tribute came just one month after the legendary icon was found dead at his Paisley Park home in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on April 21 at age 57.
Shortly after her performance, BET threw shade in a teaser for their upcoming tribute to the “When Doves Cry” singer. “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We got you,” the network tweeted. Some Prince fans also launched a petition prior to Madonna’s performance in an attempt to stop her from taking the stage, claiming that Prince was “more than worthy of a better choice as a main performer.”
Several celebs came to the Material Girl’s defense, including Roots drummer Questlove. “Every Prince rendition will not be a life-changing orgasmic xperience. Just to SING his work is brave enough,” he wrote on Twitter on May 23. “EVERYBODY wants and deserves a chance to say goodbye in their own way.”
Just one day after firing back at BET, Madonna shared another post on Instagram, simply writing, “I Will Shade You. hahahhahahahhahah.”
